摘要

The forthcoming European Union Directives on the management of electrical and electronic waste (WEEE Directive) and the prohibition of the use of certain materials in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS Directive) are primarily aimed at controlling waste from private households. However, the Directives also cover electrical and electronic waste from the commercial and industrial sectors that is similar in nature and quantity to that from private households. The aerospace and military electronics sector may be able to claim that its products are outside the scope of the WEEE Directive but, at the time of writing, there appears to be no such exemption available in the RoHS Directive. Even if exempt, the sector will find it increasingly difficult to remain isolated from the impact of the Directives. Materials and processes currently being specified may not be readily available for long-term production or in-service support due to the long lifecycle of the sector's products. This paper represents the view of the author and does not necessarily represent those of BAE SYSTEMS Avionics.
