The RoHS directive will be implemented on July 1st 2006 and will ban lead solders. This will require a great deal of work for equipment manufacturers to solve all of the technical difficulties that will occur. However, lead-free soldering is already here with many products on the market that have been made using lead-free solders. Lead-free solder alloys are widely available and satisfactory results can be achieved with good process control. There are issues that need to be resolved such as the supply of components with lead-free solderable coatings.
