The key objectives of this paper are:- 1. To highlight the essential qualities of an ideal recycler and to indicate areas of potential high risk where extra care needs to be taken in supplier selection 2. To share experiences in setting standards for recyclers 3. Determination of strategies for supplier evaluation The scope will cover the above areas from the viewpoint of customer, recycler, auditor and management systems designer. It will include a review of the major business issues of concern to potential customers, such as value, markets and reporting protocols. Examples of reporting protocols will be given. The environmental requirements of the WEEE directive will be discussed along with other key environmental considerations. The presentation will review briefly wider ethical and sustainability issues and leadership and innovation roles for both customer and recycler. The value of industry standards, such as ISO 14001, will be discussed along with customer driven supplier standards. The value of the presentation will be to present the essential requirements of a WEEE recycler and to help to inform both customers and suppliers of WEEE recycling services in order to achieve a balanced view of business, environmental and other criteria.
