Household appliance manufacturers have given the European institutions high marks for some of the sensible choices they have made. But producers are unequivocal in underling the huge burden that the legislation imposes upon them, adding yet another element to the manufacturing cost base in Europe. In the post-adoption era, it will be key to ensure that governments abstain from adding unnecessary burden on industry and create scope for flexible solutions. Governments must now respect the delicate balance when turning the directives into national law and practice.
