An often overlooked approach in regards to the optimization of dust collector performance is the "filter drag" calculation. The concept of "filter drag" can be used to predict dustcake build-up and revised cleaning cycle changes that may be required to stabilize system performance. This technique is useful for comparing performance at different flow and pressure drop conditions, in a system undergoing variations in flow rates or increases in available filter media area. Two examples are presented to illustrate how filter drag calculations can be used as a method of evaluating the effect of lowering filter face-velocities, and how the technique can be an effective tool for determining required cleaning frequency and preventing problems with dust removal systems.
