In choosing a new package, it is important to look not only plant operation and distribution functions, but at marketing, consumer use, and disposal or recycling as well. Further, it is important to develop an integrated supply chain relationship with the packaging materials supplier(s), to take best advantage of the situation. Economics should not be considered simply from the narrow point of view of package cost. Rather, the broad economic picture - package cost, packaging equipment capital investment, and operating costs, should all be reviewed. Packaging line staffing, line operating rate, changeover time, (specialized) packaging equipment maintenance, and filling accuracy should be considered. A comprehensive look at economic and distribution performance issues for a few possible package choices will yield results that will stand the test of time. The importance of testing a new package, on filling and sealing equipment, through distribution, and in the marketplace, cannot be over emphasized.
