The Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) programme consists of a series of 3 geostationary satellites. The objectives for this programme have been defined by the European meteorological community led by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and the European Space Agency (ESA). The first MSG satellite (MSG-1) was developed by ESA and was launched on an Ariane-5 launcher on the 28th August 2002. The subsequent flight models MSG-2 and MSG-3 are currently being procured by ESA on behalf of EUMETSAT. The MSG satellites are built by the European Industries under ESA contract with Alcatel Space Industries standing as the prime contractor. EUMETSAT is in charge of launching and operating the satellites. The MSG satellites will provide a continuous and reliable collection of environmental data in support of weather forecasting and related meteorological services. This paper will outline the early commissioning activities of MSG-1 as they are planned. It will focus namely towards the Imaging Radiometer SEVIRI (built by Astrium SAS). Since the MSG-1 launch date shifted and no commissioning results could be available for this symposium, this paper will only highlight the parameters which will be tested to derive the overall satellite performances in terms of imaging and radiometry and will rather focus towards the in-orbit storage of the satellite MSG-1.
