The IEEE 1451 family of standards defines a common interface for 'smart transducers' allowing them to be adaptable to virtually any fieldbus or control network on the market. IEEE 1451 has a wide-range of applications, but its event-driven communication is inadequate for use in the real-time deterministic systems that are becoming increasingly prevalent. This work outlines a real-time enhancement of the IEEE 1451 architecture. The time-driven (time-triggered) communication is implemented through the replacement of the defined transducer interface with the Time Triggered Controller Area Network (TTCAN) protocol. TTCAN is a new time-triggered development of the well-known CAN standard. The TTCAN protocol was co-developed by PEI/CSRC at the University of Limerick. This work briefly describes TTCAN and IEEE 1451 and presents a prototype system that introduces a real-time enhanced solution for the existing IEEE 1451 architecture. This prototype system demonstrates that a real-time, deterministic IEEE 1451 solution is both workable and feasible.
