A sensor system is described that performs long-term monitoring of fatigue damage in load-bearing welded components on structures such as earth-moving vehicles. The sensor is a steel coupon containing a fatigue pre-crack, and is permanently attached to the structure. Cyclic stresses induced in the coupon by in-service loading on the component cause the crack to lengthen. Monitoring the crack length gives a measure of the fatigue accumulated by the structure, allowing prediction of its remaining life. A battery-powered microcontroller system embedded within the sensor achieves this. The data stored on-board can be downloaded to a PC for analysis.
