In many instrumentation systems, an analogue signal is to be acquired and processed, with the signal processing commonly performed in the digital domain. The conversion process between the analogue and digital relies on high performance Analogue to Digital Converters (ADCs). In order to assess whether the ADC is operating as to the required design specification, suitable test methods are required. Testing an ADC is non-trivial, and with ever increasing performance requirements, the test needs are increasing in complexity. This paper will discuss requirements for the testing of ADCs, in particular relating to production test, and will review a range of test techniques and Built-in Self-Test (BIST) approaches for Integrated Converters.
