In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in optical spread spectrum techniques in fibre-optic multiple access networks. The advantages regarding the simplicity of implementation, utilisation of resources as well as the disturbance insensitivity in relation to interfering users and multi-path propagation can also be utilised in the optical sensor area. Up until now this area hasn't been much explored yet. This paper provides an overview of optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) principles and focuses on the major benefits of merging CDMA with established sensor technologies, particularly fibre Bragg grating networks, optical time-domain reflectometry and interferometry.
