While measurements of distributed strain are now possible using multiplexed fibre Bragg gratings, systems which use single fibres are proving to be a much more elusive prospect. One approach to this goal, based on frequency modulated continuous wave technology and the optical Kerr effect, is currently being investigated. The methodology requires remote coupling between HE_(11)~x and HE)(11)~y eigenmodes in a bowtie fibre which arises due to changes in the refractive index of the material. Some difficulties have arisen in this development, although some progress has also been made towards the final goal of measuring distributed strain with single fibres.
