A differential tensiographic method for the fingerprinting of liquids has been developed for tensiography, based on a visual graphical assessment of the differences between tensiotraces. The most useful analytical application in water science will perhaps be for the detection and quantification of trace-level differences. The extreme sensitivity in this method is illustrated by this work, which introduces the new technique by way of a feasibility study and as a consequence this should find application in water pollution studies and other areas. The technique has been applied to two organic pollutants and for the monitoring of colour and turbidity in water. The paper concludes with an outline of the future work to be done in the ongoing research project with suggestions on how to analyse trihalomethanes (THMs).
