摘要

A multipoint optical fibre sensor system is reported which is capable of detecting ethanol in water supplies. The sensor system comprises of two U-bend sensor elements, which are incorporated into a 1km length of polymer-clad silica (PCS) optical fibre. The sensor system is interrogated using Optical Time Domain Reflectometry, OTDR and it is proposed to apply artificial neural network pattern recognition to the OTDR output data to accurately classify the sensor test conditions. Signal processing techniques are applied to the resulting OTDR data with the aim of reducing the required ANN computational resources i.e. reducing the number of required nodes.
