This paper presents a new model for fast calculation of light scattering by inhomoge-neous ellipsoids with multiple layers. Explicit expressions for the scattering amplitude are derived using the modified Rayleigh-Debye approximation. The suitability of the model for the identification of coliforms in water based environments is tested through simulation algorithms in which scattered light intensity is estimated from asymmetric cell populations. Sensitivity analysis is performed on the ratio of the scattering matrix elements regarding changes in axial ratio and appearance of additional layers. It is shown that the monitoring of scattering ratio and local maxima allows the identification of a sample's geometrical morphology and internal structure, leading thus, to fast monitoring of coliforms in water samples.
