As the first step to understand the processes in the pulsed xenon discharge, temporal behavior of the radial metastable atom distribution in the xenon lamp was measured by IR laser absorption spectroscopy. In first 10 μs after starting discharge, high electron density and the decrease in the ground state atoms at the center brought about almost flat distribution of the metastable atoms at the radius less than half of the lamp inner radius. After that, the metastable atom density became higher at the center than outside because of the recombination between electrons and ions. Modeling including calculation of electron and temperature distribution to verify the discussion is now in progress.
