In the present work the effect of impurities commonly found in silicon on the direct reaction with methyl chloride catalyzed by Cu and promoters was studied. Ca, Al, and Fe in the form of CaO, Al° and FeCl_3 were added to undoped high purity Si (99,999%), according to a factorial planning, as a way to verify the actual effect of those elements on the dimethyldichlorosilane production after an appreciable conversion of Si. It was observed that the rate of conversion of Si 99,999% is lower than to that of Si ~99%, and that the addition of significant amounts of Al, Ca, and Fe in the mentioned form doesn't increase significantly the observed activity with Si 99,999%. These results indicate that besides the effect observed by its existence in the intermetallic compounds, the presence of those metallic impurities in the silicon crystal lattice weaken the Si-Si bonds and cause an increase in the activity observed with Si -99%. The effects of those elements about the reaction vary with the conversion of the silicon.
