The author has seen an increased use of shaft-mounted, right angle drive assemblies. These designs use the pulley shaft as its "foundation" and can create significant overhung loads. To reliably perform, the pulley and shaft must be designed for these special requirements. This paper will focus on the development of overhung loads and their design effects. Special considerations to maximize perofrmance will be presented and comparisons with other drive options will be made. Experience in heavy mining applications will be used throughout.
