In 1987 the Regional Municipality of Waterloo completed a four stage Master Water Supply Study (MWSS) to establish a long term (50 years) water supply for the Cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge, Ontario. The MWSS recommended implementation of the Mannheim Artificial Recharge Scheme. In 1992, the Region completed the first phase of the project, which involved construction of a raw water supply pipeline from the Grand River and a 72,800 m3/day (16 MIgd) water treatment plant near Mannheim. Subsequent phases, which included field testing of alternate recharge systems, were put on hold in 1991 pending completion of the Long Term Water Strategy (LTWS) . The LTWS was intended to review the long term water supply options for the Region including the use of new technologies for aquifer recharge.rnEvaluations undertaken during the LTWS determined that aquifer recharge was feasible at Mannheim, although it was recommended that the system be re-designed to include Aquifer Storage Recovery (ASR) wells. Using ASR wells, the Region has the opportunity of storing significant quantities of treated surface water beneath the Mannheim treatment plant within an unconfined sand and gravel aquifer and a deep confined limestone aquifer. An ASR well was constructed in the unconfined aquifer. A series of recharge, storage and recovery cycles commenced in April, 1997 and will continue for up to one year. Initial test data indicates the ASR well will be capable of recharging and recovering treated water at rates greater than 4546 m3/day (1 MIgd). If the testing program confirms the feasibility of ASR at Mannheim, the Region may realize significant cost savings compared to conventional alternatives such as expansion of water treatment, storage, or transmission facilities.
