摘要

Des Moines Water Works (DMWW) is expanding it's finished water supply to 55 million gallons per day (MGD). DMWW's existing plant has reached it's reliable treatment capacity. DMWW is building a second surface water treatment plant supplied by alluvial wells that will be capable of only 25 MGD. To develop the remaining 30 MGD, DMWW is evaluating the feasibility of Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) using a deep midwestern aquifer. This is the first ASR evaluation in the midwest and the deepest storage zone attempted. DMWW received an EPA Demonstration Program Grant to evaluate the use of the Jordan Aquifer for ASR.rnA Phase I Preliminary Feasibility Study was performed in 1996 to evaluate the geology and geochemistry of the Jordan Aquifer storage zone at a depth 2,500 feet. The potential operational challenges posed by differences in temperature, pressure, and water chemistry will be evaluated through demonstration testing beginning in the spring of 1997. The Phase I study noted that 3.7 billion gallons in ASR storage would provide 30 MGD of emergency supply for 90 days, and provide 20 MGD of seasonal peak capacity for 48 days per year. Preliminary cost estimates indicate that the 30 MGD ASR supply could be developed for a capital cost of approximately $0.53/gallon per day of peak capacity by converting existing production wells and installing several new wells. If the demonstration program confirms ASR feasibility, other midwestern water utilities relying on the regionally extensive Jordan Aquifer could benefit from the results of the program and develop their own cost-effective ASR systems.
