Disposable oxygen probes were applied to a PS copper converter to measure the change of oxygen pressure of molten phases, such as white metal and blister copper, during the copper-making stage. The probes were dipped into white metal through the converter's mouth in intermittent stoppage of the copper blow, or into white metal or blister copper through a tuyere during the blowing. Several measurements were also carried out for blister copper poured into a ladle to investigate the final oxygen pressure in the copper blow. Based on the obtained results, reaction mechanism of the copper-making stage in a PS converter has been deduced as follows. The copper-making stage may be classified into three substages. In the early substage where the tuyeres are completely contacted with white metal, direct oxidation of white metal by oxygen gas contained in the reaction air progresses in the vicinity of the tuyeres. In the intermediate substage where both phases of white metal and blister copper coexist in the converter and the reaction air is blown into the blister copper, oxygen in the reaction air and sulfur in the white metal get dissolved into the blister copper, and then mutual reaction between dissolved oxygen and sulfur proceeds in the bulk of the blister copper under the condition of P_(so_2)≒1 atm regardless of an actual SO_2 concentration in the converter waste gas.
