A Review of Pipeline Damage Assessment and Lifetime Prediction in the People's Republic of China

In the paper, the status quo and development trend are introduced of the Chinese Oil and Gas pipeline industry and the significance of safety assessment for oil and gas pipelines are also expounded. Safety assessment methods for defect containing pipeline and the latest progress are generalized. The safety assessment for oil and gas pipeline can be categorized with respect to three aspects: the safety assessment with respect to geological disaster, the integrity assessment for defect-containing pipeline, and the effective protective life prediction of the protection coating layer. The pipeline integrity assessment methods can be further categorized as remaining strength assessment and remaining life prediction for defect containing pipeline. The defects can be classified into five types for remaining strength assessment and three groups for remaining life prediction. Up to now, we have carried out integrity assessment for over fifteen in-service oil and gas pipelines. In the near future, we should focus a certain extent of attention to the geological disaster assessment and effective protection life prediction for the coating layer. In the paper, three typical strength remaining models and three service life prediction methods are also introduced briefly. The other main point is the fractal characterization of hydrogen induced cracking which is especially a major problem for pipeline in China. A relationship is developed among general efficiency surface energy, hydrogen induced cracking threshold stress intensity factor and fractal dimension. The recent research status quo in China is also reviewed for soil induced stress corrosion cracking and some new interesting phenomena is also reported here. Finally, one typical application example was introduced, that fully accounted for the importance of safety assessment of oil and gas pipeline.
