The pipeline industry, undergoing significant changes because of revisions to safety regulations, has responded by formalizing a method to assess the integrity of pipelines with respect to corrosion damage. This method, termed Direct Assessment (DA), is intended to serve as an integrity verification tool, playing the same role within pipeline integrity management as in-line inspection and hydrotesting (either as a replacement or as a complement). The method relies on 1) identifying a mechanism for corrosion susceptibility, 2) detecting a property associated with this mechanism through an indirect measurement, 3) performing a direct observation of the pipe (by excavation), and 4) correcting for any discrepancies between the predictions and observations. DA processes have been developed for external corrosion, internal corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Although the underlying principles of DA are familiar and the individual detection tools are well established, the formalized approach for the purpose of integrity verification has only recently been developed. DA is considered effective, but gaps in the implementation of the technology still exist that require additional research. In addition, the future of Direct Assessment is predicted to follow the evolution of pipeline integrity management to a more quantitative approach.
