Microbial involvement in corrosion can lead to the unexpected failure of pipelines in the oil and gas sector. This paper provides an overview of the ways in which microbes can be involved in the corrosion process and how conceptual models can be developed based on a specific mechanism. Presented in the form of a fault tree, conceptual models can provide insight into the key conditions and processes that must combine to cause a microbially assisted pipeline failure. The use of this kind of model in assessing the condition of an operating pipeline is considered for both external and internal threats to system integrity.
