The scope of this work is to feature the new tool for thernexploitation of the CryoSat data, designed andrndeveloped entirely by the Altimetry Team at ESRINrnEOP-SER (Earth Observation – Exploitation, Researchrnand Development).rnThe tool framework is composed of two separaterncomponents: the first one handles the data collectionrnand management, the second one is the processingrntoolkit.rnThe CryoSat FBR (Full Bit Rate) data is downlinkedrnuncompressed from the satellite, containing un-averagedrnindividual echoes. This data is made available in thernKiruna CalVal server in a 10 day rolling archive. Dailyrnat ESRIN all the CryoSat FBR data, in SAR and SARinrnMode, are downloaded (around 30 Gigabytes)rncatalogued and archived in local ESRIN EOP-SERrnworkstations.rnAs of March 2013, the total amount of FBR data is overrn9 Terabytes, with CryoSat acquisition dates spanningrnJanuary 2011 to February 2013 (with some gaps). Thisrnarchive was built by merging partial datasets availablernat ESTEC and NOAA, that have been kindly madernavailable for EOP-SER team.rnThe on-demand access to this low level data is restrictedrnto expert users with validated ESA P.I. credentials.rnCurrently the main users of the archiving functionalityrnare the team members of the Project CP4O (STSECryoSatrnPlus for Ocean), CNES and NOAA.rnThe second component of the service is the processingrntoolkit. On the EOP-SER workstations there isrninternally and independently developed software that isrnable to process the FBR data in SAR/SARin mode torngenerate multi-looked echoes (Level 1B) andrnsubsequently able to re-track them in SAR and SARinrnmode (Level 2) over open ocean, exploiting thernSAMOSA model and other internally developedrnmodels.rnThe processing segment is used for research &rndevelopment scopes, supporting the developmentrncontracts awarded confronting the deliverables to ESA,rnon site demonstrations/training to selected users, crosscomparisonrnagainst third part products (CLS/CNES CPPrnProducts for instance), preparation to Sentinel-3rnmission, ublications, etPc.rnSamples of these experimental SAR/SARin L1b/L2rnProducts can be provided to the scientific communityrnfor comparison with self-processed data, on-request.rnSo far, the processing has been designed and optimizedrnfor open ocean studies and is fully functional only overrnthis kind of surface but there are plans to augment thisrnprocessing capacity over coastal zones, inland watersrnand over land in sight of maximizing the exploitation ofrnthe upcoming Sentinel-3 Topographic mission over allrnsurfaces.rnThere are also plans to make the toolkit fully accessiblernthrough software “gridification” to run in the ESRinrnGPod (Grid Processing on Demand) Service and tornextend the tool’s functionalities to support Sentinel-3rnMission (both Simulated and Real Data).rnGraphs and statistics about the spatial coverage andrnamount of FBR data actually archived on the EOP-SERrnworkstations and some scientific results will be shownrnin this paper along with the tests that have beenrndesigned and performed to validate the products (testsrnagainst CryoSat Kiruna PDGS Products and againstrntransponder data).
