In this paper it is proposed that the ARINC 653 avionics standard is a good candidate to take the rolernof the standard operating system interface building block included in the space on-board softwarernframework defined within the scope of the ESA Harmonization effort. Within the paper, we presentrna comprehensive overview of the ARINC 653 standard; some needed adaptations with regard to itsrnapplication to space and future research directions to define the best suited adaptations.
