摘要

In the saturated zone of hydromorphic soils redox conditions are generally favourable for denitrification. This is often caused by the presence of fossil organic carbon and reduced sulphur compounds in the subsoil. There is growing concern that continuing nitrate input from agricultural sources might exhaust these fossil pools of re-ductants. This might result in increasing groundwater nitrate levels in the future.
