The La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor (LACBWR) was a 50 megawatt-electric demonstration reactor constructed by Allis Chalmers, the Atomic Energy Commission, and Dairyland Power Cooperative (DPC). LACBWR achieved initial criticality in July 1967. DPC commenced commercial operation in October 1971. The reactor was shut down permanently in April 1987. Following defueling of the reactor, and a change of license to a 10 CFR 50 Possession Only License, LACBWR was placed in SAFSTOR with a scheduled decommissioning starting in 2019.
