Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL) operates two nuclear Research and Development (R&D) laboratories in Canada, Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) near Ottawa, Ontario, and Whiteshell Laboratories (WL), near Winnipeg, Manitoba. WL started operation in the early 1960s. Programs carried out at WL included reactor safety research, nuclear materials research, industrial radiation applications, and the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program (CNFWMP) (also conducted at the nearby Underground Research Laboratory).
