In the German Prototype Spent Fuel Reprocessing Plant Karlsruhe (WAK Fig. 1), reprocessing of nuclear spent fuel was stopped in late 1990 in accordance with the principal political decision to abolish reprocessing on an industrial scale in Germany. Since 1991 the WAK has been under decommissioning. The final decommissioning task is the "green meadow" (stage 3).rnThe decommissioning and dismantling of the WAK will be achieved in six steps taking into account, that some processing and liquid waste storage equipment can be dismantled before and the rest only after the High Active Liquid Waste Concentrate (60m3 HAWC with an activity of 7,7 x E 17 Bq) has been vitrified.rnThe main process equipment and the major utilities of the reprocessing building are already completely dismantled. Today, fine decontamination activities are taking place, to perform the release measurement of the entire building by 2017.rnAfter 8 years of construction and commissioning of the Vitrification Plant Karlsruhe, the VEK started with hot operation Sept. 2009. In March 2010, 45 m3 of 60 m3 high active liquid waste, were vitrified. 80 canisters out of 130 canisters planned with 400 kg waste glass each, were produced. The end of the vitrification of 60 m3 HAWC is expected mid of 2010.rnFive Medium Active Waste (MAW) tanks and four High Active Waste Concentrate (HAWC) tanks have to be dismantled during or after finishing of the HAWC vitrification.rnWith respect to the radiation level (up to - 500 Sv/h) and the overall remaining activity (2,5 x El5 Bq), the tanks (mass in total 90 Mg) have to be dismantled remotely by using a commercially available remotely controlled, hydraulically powered dredger of the 8 Mg class, equipped with state of the art electrical power manipulators in combination with electrical master slave manipulators with force feedback. The heavily shielded concrete cells, housing the MAW and HAWC tanks, are not equipped with suitable access for the demolition equipment, radiation and contamination controlled material transfer, as well as man access. For that purpose, it was necessary to erect an auxiliary building (HWL-Annex South Fig. 2). The HWL-Annex South including its operational facilities - double lid ports, shielding locks, cranes, remote control room, CCTV-Systems and the remote demolition equipment - were commissioned January 2010. Since March, 2010 the remote dismantling of the five MAW tanks is on the way. Two small tanks are already dismantled. The end of remote dismantling of the MAW tanks is expected end of 2010.
