The paper describes the alternatives for bringing the TLP concept into ultradeepwater.rnThe challenge has been long recognised; the hydrostatic head results in a heavyrntendon that requires a larger hull to carry the weight.rnThe step-diameter tendon is a concept that neutralizes the tendon weight. The benefitrnof the step-diameter tendon as well as of a low cost, medium modulus carbon fiberrntendon are illustrated in terms of overall cost, as compared to a conventional tendonrnsystem.rnThe benefits are illustrated by a case study for a Gulf of Mexico application. Thernresults show that the step-diameter gives substantial savings in hull and tendon costsrnin 2,000m and the benefits grow to over 40 percent (of the hull and tendon system) inrn3,000m. The carbon fiber system offers a similar potential in 3,000m.rnThis paper shows that by the new tendon solutions, will maintain its competitivenessrnalso in ultradeepwater applications.
