Dead oil samples obtained from three live oils, with markedly different API gravitiesrnand asphaltene contents, were analyzed for their fractional composition and the stability ofrntheir asphaltenes. The dead oil data were used to predict ex-ante, the potential of asphaltenernprecipitation in the live oils. The three live oils, which dead oil testing showed had stable orrnmarginally unstable asphaltenes, were depressurized separately and then as commingled fluidsrnin a mercury free PVT cell with a piston and a solids detection system. The onset pressure ofrnasphaltene precipitation, the saturation pressure, and the amount of asphaltenes precipitatingrnwere determined for these oils.rnCommingling changed the saturation and onset pressures, as would be expected,rnhowever, the amount of asphaltenes precipitating increased by more than an order ofrnmagnitude. This was more than would be predicted from depressurization alone. Comminglingrnaffected the stability of the asphaltenes and contributed to their precipitation.
