Many claims have been made about the benefits of usingrnpolyester mooring systems. Indeed a number of systems havernalready been successfully deployed and more global acceptancernis gaining momentum. However clarity is required on thernmeasurable benefits of deploying such materials in deepwaterrnmooring systems. This leads us to the main objective:rnThe main objective of this paper is to establish clarity of therncost and technology benefits for the deployment of polyesterrnmoorings in different types of offshore mooring systems.rnIHC/(SBM) is currently gaining valuable experience in therndesign and deployment of polyester catenary and taut mooringrnsystems and BP Amoco asked SBM to help provide additionalrnclarity on the benefits of such polyester mooring systems.rnRegional deployment has been considered with the main areasrnbeing:rnWest Africa - Benign environmentrnBrazil - Reasonably benign environmentrnGulf of Mexico - Hurricanes with loop currentsrnWest of Shetland - Persistent extreme environmentrnIn each regional case , the mooring system descriptions arernprovided. A comparison between polyester and steel, catenaryrnand taut mooring systems is performed both on a technical and arncost basis.rnDue to the different nature of steel and fibre rope materials, arnnumber of specific requirements apply for polyester duringrninstallation. In a separate section, the implications on deploymentrnand handling of anchor legs with polyester segments arerndiscussed from a cost and technical perspective.
