Abstract: Optimization methods have long been used forcomputer-aided optical design. In most cases, theproblems to treat are 1D. Furthermore, the number ofparameters we can vary is relatively small. Ophthalmiclens design, and in particular progressive additionlens (PAL) design, is quite different from classicaloptical design. PAL design requires the use ofnonsymmetrical diopters defined by geometrical, opticalor physiological quantities calculated for each pointof the lens by ray-tracing methods. The large number ofparameters, the complexity of the cost function and thelarge number of constraints, require to implementspecific descent, optimization and differentiationmethods. !17
