Eurostar operates the high speed (300 kph) passenger services through the Channel Tunnel. On entry into service it was found to have extremely high rates of flange wear, and high associated costs, due to the curvy routes it operates over in the UK. This paper looks at the actions which have been taken to bring the wear to an acceptable level. In particular it looks at the lessons that have been learnt with regard to ensuring effective operation of trackside lubricators. Ways of potentially increasing the flange life further are also considered.
