INVESTIGATION OF SURFACE GEOMETRY THERMAL BARRIER COATINGS USING COMPUTED X-RAY TOMOGRAPHY

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are essential part of gas turbine engines; Due to multilayer anatomy of TBCs, different measurement and imaging techniques are being utilized for their characterization. Use of non-destructive measurement techniques to characterize factors contributing to the failure is in particular of great interest as premature spallation of the TBCs is a major concern for their use. In this work, the feasibility of use of computed X-ray tomography (Micro CT) for characterizing TBCs is discussed. It has been shown mat image acquisition parameters in addition to post-processing of the images have to be modified and optimized based on the region of interest in TBCs. The optimized acquisition and post-processing parameters have been introduced and their effects on the quality of images are demonstrated. Finally, the feasibility of repeatable and quantitative analysis of TBCs is studied. These analyses include bond coat surface geometry change (rumpling) analysis, top coat surface geometry change analysis, and quantifying the relation between the top coat and bond coat surface parameters. The limitations and challenges are introduced and suggested remedies are discussed and their effectiveness is demonstrated. For any analysis for recording changes in any layers of TBC, a high repeatability is a must. It has been shown that suggested procedures can lead to obtaining the repeatability required for the mentioned analyses.
