When laboratory results of animal feed and pork fat samples obtained on 6 December confirmed the presence of dioxins, the Irish authorities had to initiate the biggest food recall to date in Ireland. As a consequence the agriculture sector suffered serious economic losses from the recall and Ireland's reputation as a prime food producer was under threat. The authorities had to overcome a multitude of obstacles in communicating with the consumer, due to substantial media coverage and conflicting dissemination of information at the height of the crisis. However, there was full compliance with the recall throughout the food chain and Irish pork products returned to the shelves with consumers' interests fully protected. One of the most significant outcomes of this recall was the fact that nationally and internationally it showed clearly that the Irish food safety control system works. The problem was identified, swift and decisive regulatory action taken, the issue was closed down within a week with safe product returning to the market and consumers' confidence in the safety of food in Ireland was restored.
