Hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) are emerging as ubiquitous environmental contaminants with great environmental risk. To study the environmental transformation of OH-PBDEs, 4'-OH-BDE-17 was synthesized and selected as a model compound. Direct photolysis of the compound and its reactivity with hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4·-) were investigated. The photodegradation of 4'-OH-BDE-17 in water took place under the light with the wavelength greater than 290 nm, and the photolytic kinetics was markedly affected by the solution pH. Alkali greatly facilitated the direct photolysis. The half-lives (t1/2) of 4'-OH-BDE-17 at pH = 6.6 and pH = 3.0 were 28 times and 32 times longer than that at pH = 10, respectively. The reaction rate constant of 4'-OH-BDE-17 with ·OH was 7.08 × 109 M-1 s-1, indicating that the reaction with ·OH may be an important transformation pathway of 4'-OH-BDE-17 in water. A fast reaction rate constant with SO4 ·- was observed, with the t1/2 to be 9.5 ± 0.7 min. This study will be helpful to understand the environmental fate of OH-PBDEs.
