Dated sediment cores provide an excellent way to investigate the historical input of persistent organic pollutants into the environment and to identify possible sources of pollution. The vertical distribution of Polychlorinated dibenzo-pdioxins (PCDD), and dibenzo-p-furans (PCDF) was investigated in sediment cores from Chica de San Pedro Lake in central Chile to elucidate their historical trend inputs over the last fifty years. Sediment cores were analysed for PCDD/F using HRGC/MS and radioisotopically dated using 210Pb. Organic carbon content (OC) was also measured. Results showed that average PCDD/F (pg g-1 dry weight (d.w.)) concentration was 765 ±551. The percentage of organic carbon was not variable with an average value of 8 ± 1. Analysis of PCDD/F congener composition identified a common pattern of Dioxins. High chlorinated PCDD/F (OCDD and OCDF) were the most abundant congeners, accounting for 70-90% of the total PCDD/Fs composition. Historical deposition patterns indicate a decrease of PCDD/F down the sediment core, with the highest pick detected during 1996 (62 pg cm2 year-1) and 1970 (57). These results are in agreement with the history of industrial activities and other settlements of this Region. Since, the Chica of San Pedro Lake is not directly affected by industrial activities the loading of PCDD/Fs into the lake sediments might be influenced mostly by atmospheric transport and deposition processes. This data are a useful contribution to the knowledge of PCDD/F levels in Chile.
