Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are a relatively new wastewater-treatment technology in which arncombination of suspended growth activated sludge biological treatment and membrane filtrationrnequipment is used to perform the critical solids/liquid separation function that is traditionallyrnaccomplished using secondary clarifiers and filters. Information is lacking on the effectiveness ofrnMBRs in removing human enteric viruses from wastewaters, particularly as compared tornremoval by conventional plants before and after disinfection. During three recreational seasonsrn(May–October), when disinfection of effluents is required in Ohio, removals of bacterialrnindicators, coliphage (indicator viruses which are not harmful to humans), and human entericrnviruses were studied throughout the treatment processes in three MBR and two conventionalrnsecondary activated sludge municipal wastewater treatment plants. Removals of all organismsrnwere higher across secondary treatment for MBR plants than for conventional plants andrnultraviolet disinfection after MBR secondary treatment provided little additional removal of anyrnorganism except for one type of coliphage. Reductions in capital cost, O&M cost, environmentalrnimpacts, and safety impacts are other considerations further supporting the argument that arndisinfection process unit after MBR secondary treatment provides little significance.
