The purpose of this paper is to discuss (1) the distribution of the Eocambrian Hormuz saltseries in the Zagros region; (2) the timing of salt diapirism; (3) the influence of pre-existingsalt structures on fold-and-trust location and propagation; (4) the mechanisms of rapid saltextrusion, and also (5) the location of the salt diapirs relative to thrusts and folds.The mechanisms of diapirism in the Hormuz series have been a subject of interest for manyyears in the Zagros fold-and-thrust belt. Most of the authors emphasis the role of salt on foldpropagation (basal decollement, fold propagation style),or the role of basement fault or pull-apartzone on the development of diapirs prior to the main shortening event.We based our interpretation on both geological observations, seismic and well data. Geologicdata are then compared to analogue sand box experiments. On these bases, we argue that thedriving mechanism of Hormuz halokinesis extrusion, during the Zagros folding and erosion,is the squeezing of pre-existing salt diapirs during shortening. These diapirs also influence thelocation of thrusts and strike slip relay faults (weak zones). Emergent diapirs occurred abovepre-existing domes along these faults, or at the plunging axes of the folds. Diapirs exposed inthe core of the anticlines are likely pre-existing salt pillow detached from the salt layer by thethrust propagation. Understanding the formation and development of the Hormuz diapirs is akey issue for reservoir understanding and hydrocarbon trapping in the Zagros province.
