Molecular imprinting technique, which can provide materials that could be utilized for analysis and separation of target molecules, has gained much more attention in recent years. Several synthetic methods especially polymerization in bulk or solution have been proposed for the preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The rebinding kinetics of MIPs from bulk or solution polymerization, however, is slow and limits the application due to most recognition sites being embedded in MIP matrices. Therefore, the preparation of spherical imprinted polymers with binding sites on the surface has attracted increasing interest. In our work, copper ion imprinted polymer microspheres were prepared by emulsion polymerization. A series of experiments were conducted in test tube with different kinds of surfactants at various ratios to investigate the effects of emulsifier system on the stability of monomer emulsion and polymerization.
