At the 2002 Microwave Update/VHF Conference, I won a couple of promising door prizes. They were a pair each of the Ericsson PTF10007 and PTF10160 LDMOS devices. I quickly looked at the specs and noted they were good to 960MHz. For the next year, I set them aside and looked around for someone who had built amps using these. No luck, so I decided to give the PTF10007 a try. It looked like it might be pushed to 1.3GHz, but friends were skeptical. I had nothing to lose but had never built an amplifier before, and was unfamiliar with LDMOS. This had one very positive feature -it requires positive bias on the gate rather than a negative bias. That sure made the circuit a lot simpler.
