Partial rootzone drying (PRD) is widely investigated as an effective irrigation technique.However,PRD effect can be profoundly affected by other environmental factors and the performance of plant can easily be deviated from optimal point,which obtained with only considering water supply.Nutrient placement is another important factor affecting selective root placement.We hypothesized that the PRD effect could be mediated by the interaction effect between PRD and fertilization positioning.Using oilseed plants,a field-grown experiment was conducted in an un-heated natural-lit greenhouse through whole season.8 treatments were set up.They were a factorial combination of four watering regimes (100% control half-half in both sides of plant;50% control half-half in both sides of plant;50% fixed applied only to one side of plant;50% alternate applied only to one side for one irrigation but shifted to another side for next irrigation) and two fertilizer placement levels (uniform and patch).Alternate PRD had increased yield of oilseed rape while working with patch fertilizer placement and tested to be an effective water-nutrient co-optimizing supply technique,suggesting that PRD effect was significantly mediated by nutrient positioning.
