Mismanagement of tailings holds the potential environmental degradation. The stability of dam must be must be analysed and the seepage from the impoundment must be controlled. This paper investigates the soil engineering properties for the construction of iron ore tailing dam, its foundation, construction materials and design data used for the construction analysis of the tailing dam. Geophysical investigations were carried out to establish below the spillway. The computer programme used in the stability analysis has been discussed.. It also focuses on the physical chemical properties of the tailings responsible for the effective design of tailing pond for the environmentally safe containment of the tailings. In the tailings iron concentration was around 45%. Studies were conducted for the further recovery of usable ore fines, which can be used as a sinter feed mixed with iron ore fines. It reveals that it will also extend the plant life of tailing pond. The studies on the settling characteristics of tailings indicate that the area provided in the existing tailing ponds in India is much more than that of the experimental results. This paper concludes that sedimentation test is essential to design appropriate tailing pond size. In the proposed scheme it is suggested to provide an additional unit of sedimentation tank before the disposal of tailings to the tailing pond.
