Aromatic phosphates have a significant historical background as fire retardant products. The parent compound, triphenyl phosphate was initially used in cellulosic materials (Weil (1975). Cullis and Hirschler (1981)). The growth of engineering plastics has resulted in an increase in the use of aromatic phsphates as fire retardants in this field. They combine a relatively high fire retardant efficiency with sufficient stability to survive the high compounding temperatures of these thermoplastics.
