This work deals with the effect of the zinc borate: Firebreak~( direct R ) 415: 4ZnO centre dot H_2O added to the magnesium hydroxide in ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers. IN a first part, solid state NMR study (~(13)C, ~(25)Mg and ~(11)B) shows that there is not interaction between the additives and the polymer and no modification of the additives during processing. The fire retardancy properties and the thermal behavior of the systems are then investigated. Small addition of zinc borate in the system EVA-Mg(OH)_2 leads to a significant synergistic effect in terms of flame retardancy. Zine borate can form a glassy coating at the surface of the substrate which acts as a physical/thermal barrier and/or a polyethylenic chains glassy cage. This coating lowers the kinetic of transformation Mg(OH)_2 to MgO. The degradation of the polymeric matrix is then delayed and the flow of flammable molecules evolved from the degradation of the polymer, is reduced.
