Aliphatic and aromatic open-chain and cyclic esters of sulfurous acid are able to deompose hydroperoxides in a non-radical way. They act as secondary antioxidants. The reaction of the organic sulfurous acid esters with hydroperoxide proceeds in two steps, in a slow reductive and a fast catalytic step. During this reaction acidic sulfur compounds are formed from the sulfite by oxidation or peroxidolysis andsubsequent hydrolysis. STraces of these compounds cause a rapid catalyitc decomposition of the hydroperoxides.
