Vinylidene choloride copolymers are of immense importance to the barrier plactic packaging industry. They display good barrier to both oxygen (to prevent spilage of the package food item) and flavor and aroma molecules (to prevent "scalping" of flavor ingredients during storage). However, at melt process temperatures these polymers undergo degradative dehydrochlorination. Hydrogen Choloride must be trapped to preventinteraction with the walls of process equipment to form metal halides which may act as Lewis acids to catalyze and accelerate the degradation process. The avilability of a new high surface area magnesium hydroxide from Dead Sea periclase offered the potential for the development of an effective stabilizer for vinylidene chloride copolymers. The effectiveness of this material for such stabilization has been compared to that afforded by other more conventional, commercially-available magnesium hydroxides.
