Abstract: Gem bearing miarolitic cavities in rare metal, lithiumenriched, granitic pegmatites pose challengingexploration targets, as they are not readilyidentifiable using normal geophysical methods.Application of ground penetrating radar (GPR) has beensuccessful in delineating gem-bearing zones in theHimalaya pegmatite mine in San Diego County,California. Careful setup and data processing, usingcomplex signal analysis, have so far allowed us todistinguish between gem- bearing pockets, non-gembearing pockets, and barren/frozen dike. Each of usindependently hypothesized, in 1995, that GPR could bean appropriate tool for gemstone exploration in thesubsurface exposures in adits, drifts and stopes ofmany gem mines (Patterson, 1996; Cook, 1997). Theculmination of these efforts was reached in June, 1998,with the first documented discovery of gem tourmalinepockets using this technique. !15
